I am so sorry that both last week and this week have gotten away from me and I didn't update you with all of the things we are working on in room 111. We hit the ground running every morning and I didn't get a chance to stop and fill you in on all of the great things we have been doing!
First, your child should have brought home a Conference Sign Up sheet today. Please check your calendars and return the note to me with your preferred conference time. If these forms could be returned by Friday, that would be wonderful. I will do my best to accommodate every one's schedule.
Did your child bring home a new sight word folder? I hope they told you all about it. Please be sure to practice a list each night with your first grader. I try to test them 2-3 times each week. The words on these lists are critical "have-to-know" words for first graders. Classic practice will help make their recognition automatic.
Did your child come home and tell you about the word "perspective"? If not, be sure to ask them what perspective is. We are focusing a lesson around this important vocabulary word. We have also had some fun changing our perspective and looking at things differently.
This Friday is FIRST GRADE'S Movie Night!!! We are hoping to have lots of kids in attendance. This month's movie is Kung Fu Panda 2. We will be having Tae-Kwon-Do demonstrations, games and of course the movie with a popcorn intermission.
Can you believe that next Monday January 30 is our 100th day of first grade? I can't believe it myself. We will be celebrating this monumental day with various counting activities. A letter will be coming home with more information, but a heads up--the kids are invited to wear clothing with numbers on them (jerseys work great) and they will also be asked to bring a bag of 100 things. The items can all be the same,or they can be mixed. Some ideas: marshmallows, M&Ms, Q-tips, cottonballs, craft sticks, pennies. Small items from around the house work perfectly. Have your child start thinking about their collection now and get a head start on their weekend homework.
Did your child tell you about Randy Nadler coming to visit us yesterday? We got to see a wonderful picture scrapbook for Mr. Nadler's trip to Vietnam. Ask your child to tell you about his visit.
Tomorrow is Library day! Help your child remember to bring back any Library books.

That's a Wrap!
Whew! What a busy week in first grade. We spent today filling our brains with information about Dr. King. Your first grader should be able to tell you many facts about this important leader in our nation's history. Be sure to ask your child to teach you something interesting about Dr. King. They are bringing home many projects and mini books we made to help them remember some interesting facts. Have them tell you about Rosa Parks and what her impact was on Dr. King.
We focused on 2 fancy pants words today: "peaceful" and "mercy". Ask your child to tell you what each of these words means. We made handprint doves to represent Dr. King's mission for peace. Come on by our room and check out our peaceful display.
Today was Power Half-Hour and ALL of our class family was able to participate! Yippee! I am so proud of my first graders for getting their homework completed and returned in time. Way to go!

Midweek Update
We packed lots of learning into our day! We kicked off our day reviewing the word families: _at, _it, and _ot. Ask your child to tell you three different words in each word family such as: hat, bat, cat; hit, pit, quit; pot, not, hot. We reviewed nouns and adjectives. Have your child tell you about both of these parts of speech. We came up with lots of adjectives to describe a snowman. Your child chose 4 different adjectives to describe their imaginary snowman and then we began creating the snowman using our writing as a guide. We have some very creative first graders! Come on by our room later this week and check out our creative snowmen.
In math we continued to work on learning place value. So far, we are tackling tens and ones. Have your child tell you what they know about the tens place and the ones place. Also, challenge your child by having them tell you to identify what number has 4 tens and 6 ones (46). Play this game with your first grader to help them strengthen their concept of this important skill.
We also learned about the "Zero Smash" when adding in math. See if your child can tell you the shortcut trick to addition using the zero smash. (For example: 10 + 8,
the eight hops over and smashes the zero to take its place, so the answer is 18!)

Here we go!
We are back and ready for our first full week in 2012! I hope you all had a great weekend. We were very busy getting back into our routine today. Your child is bringing home this week's spelling words to practice, as well as their two homework pages (reading and math). Please help your child practice responsibility and encourage them to complete their homework before Friday. Our sound of the week is the bossy R! Please encourage your child to play some of the new games located under the "Reading Games" section on our blog page. These games with strengthen your child's recognition of this bossy sound and hopefully they will have a little bit of fun, too. We read the story "A Perfect Lunch" together today. Please invite your first grader to give you a summary of the story. They should be providing lots of details about this fiction story. We also read aloud the fable of the Lion and the Mouse. Be sure to check our question of the day on our blog page and see if your child can answer it!
In math we began the journey of writing our numbers to 100. We looked for patterns and highlighted similarities we found on our chart. I have included some new games under our "Math Games" section of our website, too. Have them use the interactive 100's board or "Dog Bones" to help them strengthen their understanding of number relationships. We are about to dive into the concept of place value and this week. We reviewed that numbers love to be a in group of 10. Give your child a handful of coins, raisins, M&Ms, paperclips, etc. and have them sort the pile into groups of ten. See if they can count each group using 10 groups and figure out how many total objects they have. (2 groups of 10 plus 4 left over = 24)

Back in the swing...

It was great to have these two days to get back into the swing after such a long winter break. Today we read a different adaptation of our story The Mitten. We made Venn Diagrams and compared the similarities and differences between the two versions of this folktale. Thank you to all of my responsible first graders for completing this assignment and returning their yellow mittens today! Ask your child to tell which version of The Mitten they liked better. Have them tell you why by recalling details from the story. In math we did lots of review to make sure our brains hadn't forgotten anything over break. We did lots of calendar activities today to get ourselves organized for the month of January. Be sure to ask your child to share their calendar with you that we completed this afternoon. This month we celebrate 100's day and host a movie night! It's a busy time to be a first grader.
Looking ahead to the upcoming weeks, here are some highlights that you may want to mark down on your calendar:
1. Tuesday January 10 = PTO Meeting 7pm

Welcome Back!
We are having a super-duper first day back! We spent all morning catching up and sharing details about our winter break. It sounds like a good time was had by all. We did a reflection activity and talked about the past and the future. Your child is bringing home a "mirror" with a favorite memory from 2011 and something they are looking forward to in 2012. We also read an old folktale today called The Mitten and your child has a homework assignment tonight! Here is what they need to do:
1. Your child is bringing home a paper mitten tonight
2. They need to retell you the story from memory, using the character cut-outs to help guide their story in order of events.
3. They do not have to read anything, but rather re-tell the main events to someone at home, using their mitten and characters for guidance.
Tomorrow we will read a different version of this same folktale and compare the 2 stories. Please be sure to have your child re-tell you today's story with their mitten prop. This activity helps with comprehension and sequencing. Encourage them to provide you with details and have them talk about the different characters when they have finished telling you their story.

Also, Wednesday is our holiday party with a luau theme! Please join us at 12:30 for the festivities, if you can. We will also be having an all-school sing-a-long on Wednesday at 2:45 before we dismiss for the holiday break. As always, families are welcome to come on over that join in the fun.

Holiday Countdown!

Happy Tuesday, families! My Monday blog didn't post, so I am going to try again. Get ready for a busy week! There is so much going on this week and next, we hit the ground running this morning. First things first, here are some heads-up highlights:
TOMORROW, December 14:
1. Holiday Gift Shop! Your child brought home an envelope and letter about the Holiday Gift Shop. Our class is going to visit the shop tomorrow (Wednesday) at 9:30. If you would like to have your child participate, please be sure to send the envelope and amount you would like them to spend along with a list of people to buy for. The children will bring their wrapped gifts home tomorrow.
2. TOMORROW is also our Library "Read-In". Please be sure to read the green letter that is in your child's backpack. They are invited to bring a blanket, pillow, stuffed animal, snack and a drink that looks like water to Library tomorrow. They are also invited to bring in books they no longer want (no baby books) and trade them for a new book. I found a bunch of gently used books on Craigslist that I am going to give to the kids to take so that each one of my students has a book to trade. Help your child pack up their stuff tonight and have it ready for the Read-In in specials tomorrow.
We finally finished our class totem pole! Ask your child to tell you about our "Popcorn Pow-Wow". Each team had an opportunity to share their creation before it was put on our totem pole. Come on by the class and check out this work of art! It is full of symbols that tell a lot about our class family.
Did your child tell you about their symmetry-tree? We are working hard at creating these festive trees. We also learned an Old English poem today that we recognized as a famous Christmas song. Ask your child to tell you about Old English and see if they remember the song that our poem was turned into.
We were testing like crazy today. Our kids took their Dibbels tests today as well as worked on a few more pages in our math assessment. I am so proud of them for working so hard today. Celebrate their success!

Wednesday Already?
Hi families! I have no idea how it already got to be Wednesday. WOW! We are right in the middle of another great week. Have you had a chance to visit the Book Fair? Our annual Book Fair is going on right now in the school library. It will be open until Friday and there are some super titles to choose from. All proceeds go back to help build our own Sunflower library, so we are so very grateful to all those who come and support it!
Tomorrow is Grandparent and Special Friends Day at lunch! We are inviting all grandparents and/or special friends to come have lunch with their Sunflower student. Don't forget that our first graders eat lunch at 11am. I am looking forward to meeting some special people in the lives of my first graders.
Did your child tell you about our Toys for Tots project? Our first graders have been learning about the differences between needs and wants. As a culminating project, we asked all of our first graders to donate $1 (25, 50 or 75 cents was great, too) to contribute to the Toys for Tots program. A letter came home this week with information about this opportunity to help a child in our community fufill one of their 'wants'. Tomorrow, December 9, is the final day for your first grader to donate to the optional project. Thank you so much for your help in supporting this final component of the lesson.
In math this week, we continue to practice our 10-teams. With the end of the quarter just around the corner, it's almost assessment time. Daily practice with this basic math skills is essential to help your child find greater success! Today, we began learning about 3-D shapes! Your first grader learned: cone, sphere, pyramid, cylinder, cube and prism (rectangular and triangular)! Check their memory to see if they can identify some of these shapes. Make a game of it and see if they can hunt for these shapes in the house.
We continue to work on capitalization. Check your child's understanding and ask them to tell you at least 3 different times when capitalizing is necessary.
We are still learning about Native Americans and we've moved on the the Northwest Coast. We found this region on the map and learned that there are lots of trees in this area. Ask your child to tell you what they know about the Native Americans who live in this region. Have them share their knowledge of totem poles with you, too. We began working on our own class totem pole today. Talk with your child about the symbol they chose to work on and why we decided that thier symbol represented our class family. I can't wait to see our finished product!

December is here!
The weather must be changing because we are wild in room 111! Maybe its the holiday excitement among us or perhaps the upcoming snow prediction, either way our first graders are wound up.
We learned about "Needs" vs. "Wants" today. Invite your child to tell you the difference between the two. They should also be able to give you examples of both. With the holidays coming up, I thought it was a great time to learn about the difference between needing something and wanting it. Has your child told you about our Native American False Faces? Be sure to ask them about this cool project. We have learned about symmetry. Ask your child to tell you what symmetry is. You could also ask them to find examples of symmetry around the house. We are using this concept to create and design masks that Native Americans would have worn in their ceremonies. Have your child tell you about their work-in-progress!

2. December 8 = Grandparents Day Lunch
3. December 14= Holiday Gift Shop (we will visit the store at 9:30)
4. December 20= Polar Express Day
5. December 21= Class Party 12:30-1:30
6. December 21= All-School Sing-a-long 2:45
Tomorrow is a Library Day! Help your first grader remember their books! Oh! And don't forget we have our spelling test tomorrow! Have a great night.
We learned about "Needs" vs. "Wants" today. Invite your child to tell you the difference between the two. They should also be able to give you examples of both.
