Hi friends! It has been a while since we've posted last and we apologize! We have been working our tails off in first grade getting ready to wrap up our SECOND quarter! We have been learning many new things. We have learned about contractions since our last post. Have your child teach you about contractions (hint: they should be able to tell you that a contration has an apostrophe!). We continue to work on ABC order to the second and third letter! Today we even had to alphabetize words to the FOURTH letter! WOW. We are mastering counting like groups of money and subtraction just in time for our test next Thursday! Extra practice at home having your child write their numbers by 5's and 10's will help them a great deal. Also, continue helping your child learn coin value and identification by providing them like groups of coins. They can sort, count, or hunt for various coins in a group. If you child has mastered this already, challenge them by having them count mixed groups of coins.
If your child is participating in AR at this point, please be sure you have them read their AR book to you nightly and remember the BOOK TALK. Their scores on these tests truly reflects if they have an understanding of the book they have read. Remember that reading is much more than knowing the words on the page, we want our kids to understand what they are reading, too!
We have another week of 100% return on our Power Drill! Way to go! We continue to be the only first grade class with this turn out, weekly. I am so proud of our kids for being responsible and getting their homework done on time. Great job!
Your child has traveled to Mrs. Keister's writing class last week and learned about letter writing. This week our kids are traveling to Mrs. O'Toole's science class. Ask them to tell you about the things they are learning in science this week.
A few heads up for the last few weeks of school in 2010:
1. Next Wednesday the 15th our class will be going to the Holiday Shoppe! Envelopes and a letter about the holiday shoppe came home last Friday. If you choose to participate, please return your envelope and money by next Wednesday morning.
2. Our Holiday Party will be on Monday December 20th. A letter will be coming home soon about the party and supplies that we are in need of to make it another wonderful experience!
3. Polar Express Day is Tuesday December 21. All first graders will gear up for winter break with this magical and wonderful day, focused around this classic story. More information will be coming home soon! Get your pajamas ready!
Thank you again, for your continued support and work at home. As we wrap up this second quarter, I am so proud of our kids for all of the accomplishments they have achieved!
Oh, and don't forget that tomorrow DECEMBER 9th is LIBRARY! Bring your books back!

Farewell November!
Welcome back! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving break together. The kids came back full of stories and excitement about their Thanksgiving activities this morning. It was great to see all of my smiling faces and hear about their holiday adventures. I have made another new slideshow for you to watch from various fall activites. We had such a busy and wonderful November, it's hard to believe that we will be welcoming December in two more days!
Some exciting reminders going on at school this week:
1. The book fair is all week. Come by the library to check it out! Your child went to Library today and made a wish list of items that interested them. They should have brought their wish list home today.
2. Thursday is Grandparents and Special Friends Day! If you child has a grandparent or special friend who would like to join them for lunch this Thursday, they are more than welcome! It is a great time for your child to show them the Book Fair and their classroom. I would love to meet these special people in your child's life!
Don't forget that tonight is the city lighting ceremony at Cornerstone Park. Sunflower will be represented by our 4th grade choir. Santa makes an appearance in a fire truck and there is a big countdown to the lighting. It is lots of fun! I would love to see you.
We have just over 3 weeks until winter break! Amazing! Let me know if you have any questions. Have a wonderful Monday!

Monday= C Tuesday= D Wednesday= A Thursday=B Friday= C
Happy Monday! Today we were introduced to compound words. Ask your child to tell you what they know about comPOUND words ("pound" is a clue!). We played a matching game, went on a compound word hunt in different books and used picture clues to match and write new compound words. Your child should be able to tell you at least 5 different compound words. Be sure to remind them to tell you the two separate words that are "pounded" together. For example, "birthday"-your child should be able to tell you that "birth" + "day" = "BIRTHDAY"!
We continued to learn about coins. We are working hard to identify both the front and back of each coin (penny, nickel, dime, quarter) in addition to knowing their value. Practice with your child at home by giving them some real coins to use and examine. Then, ask them to name each coin and tell you each value. As a bonus, see if they can name the president on each coin. We did a little research today and found pictures of the 4 presidents on these coins on the internet. Have them show what they know! As additional practice, have your child count LIKE groups of coins. For example, give them 6 nickels to count and ask them to tell you the VALUE of the set (30 cents). Do this same check with pennies and dimes. We are not ready for quarters yet, so let's wait before we try them out!
We also worked with mixed sets of addition and subtraction facts today. We realized the importance of looking at the sign to tell us what to do (addition or subtraction). Continued practice at home helps us find even more success here at school!
We learned a little about totem poles and what they mean to Native Americans. Our class will be creating a class totem pole and we began this project by coming up with a list of symbols that represent us. Ask your child to tell you what they suggested and have them tell you WHY their animal or symbol represents us. We have some great suggestions such as a sunflower, because we go to Sunflower school. A monkey because we talk a lot and are a "wild" class. A lion because we are strong leaders. And a flag because we live in the United States. What great ideas! This will be a fabulous project. I can't wait!
Finally, we heard little peeps coming from across the hall this afternoon! Mrs. Morgovnik's eggs are starting to emerge from their shells. We all traveled across the hall to observe what was happening. Ask you child to tell you about what they saw and heard! How exciting. We made predictions as to how many baby chicks would be hatched by tomorrow. Ask you child to tell you their prediction!
Be sure to check out our "Fall Subtraction Stories" movie from my previous post! We worked long and hard on this writing/math project. Our kids did GREAT! Have a wonderful week!

Happy November!
Monday= B Tuesday= C Wednesday= D Thursday= A Friday= B
Welcome to November in first grade! Is that possible??? I hope you all had a safe and warm Halloween weekend. I was so happy to have all of my first grade friends at school today after a busy night. We jumped right into a new month getting caught up from the chaos of last week! We introduced sight word list ten and found several homonyms on this week's list. Be sure your child knows what "too" we are learning this week, as well as what "four". This can be tricky!
In math this week, we are introducing the concept of identifying and counting like-groups of coins. Extra work at home will help your child a great deal! We began today by sharpening up our skip-counting skills by practicing by 5's and 10's. The more comfortable the children are in this area, the more successful they will be when counting groups of nickels and dimes.
We completed our November calender today. It should find it's way home in your child's backpack. Have your child tell you about the important dates that they marked.
We continued to create, read and interpret graphs today too. We even used our graph to discover some exciting news about me today! Have your child tell you about our graph entitled "How Many Kids Does Ms. Beverage Have?". Your child can tell you their vote and they should also be able to share the real answer. Surprises all around! :)
Don't forget that a new Power Drill is coming home today. As always, your child has until Thursday to hand it in. We are trying to keep up our pattern of 100% completion for our class. We are the only class so far to have had every member earn their way into Power Half-Hour! Keep it up!
Thank you to everyone who sent in goodies for our basket auction! Our "Snow Day" basket turned out to be a good one! We couldn't have done it without your donations. You are the best!
Thank you also to all of my first graders for the beautiful birthday flower pot they surprised me with last Friday! I absolutely LOVE it. You are so thoughtful to remember me on my birthday. Thank you.
One last reminder, please be sure to send your child in a COAT. Now that the weather is getting colder, they are getting more red-cheeked at recess. If the tempreature is above freezing, we go outside so bundle up!
As always, don't hesitate to email or call if you have any questions! Have a great evening.

Fabulous Friday!
WOW! What a fast and fun Friday on this Halloween Eve weekend! Thank you to all of the parents who helped make our fall party this afternoon a HUGE success. We had a shape-walk center where we used different verbs to move to the Halloween music. There was a snack station and a craft station. Finally, we had a mummy-wrap relay as well as a pumpkin, eyeball and apple relay too! Your child will be worn out tonight!
You won't believe all of the things that we got accomplished on TOP of the party today, too. This morning we wrote a book about the 12 Days of Halloween. Ask your child to tell you about the page they authored. We talked more about adjectives and found adjectives in a spooky poem about a dark, dark house. We created our own Halloween continuum to order things that were the least spooky all the way to the most spooky for us. We created a pumpkin glyph AND had time to have Power Half-Hour for all of our class members who completed their Power Drills on time. WHEW! It was a wonderful day.
Please stay warm this Halloween night. Be sure your child gets plenty of sleep so that they are ready to come back to school on Monday morning with fun stories and a healthy body. Have a super-duper weekend and I'll see you in November!

Counting Down to the spooky weekend!
We've had a super-busy day in room 111! Our pumpkin theme continues with today's scientific experiment. We are conducting a pumpkin mold experiment in our classroom. Today our kids made predictions about which pumpkin piece would mold first. Have them tell you about it!
We finished our paper pumpkin patch and it is on display in our hallway for all admirers to come and view. This was a great lesson in working together and brainstorming. Our hard work paid off! Our class pumpkin patch is beautiful and complete with labels to tell about everything we can find in a pumpkin patch! Have your child tell you what part of our patch they were responsible for.
We learned the word "Graph" today. Ask your child to tell you about graphs.
In math, we continue to work on mastering subtraction. The kids are doing awesome! Keep practicing at home with objects around the house. Practice makes PERMANENT!
Here are a few reminders for the remainder of the week:
1. Tomorrow (Thursday) is HAT DAY!
2. Power Drills are DUE tomorrow!
3. Be sure to return your DECORATED turkey feather that went home last Friday! The note is attached with an explanation of the assignment! I have received 5 back, thus far.
4. Our Fall Party is this Friday Oct. 29 from 2:30-3:20. Feel free to come and play/help! :)
Have a great evening!

Monday Reminders!
Monday = A Tuesday = B Wednesday = C Thursday = D Friday = A
Happy Monday families! We had a perfect PUMPKIN day. We learned so much about pumpkins and the science behind how they grow. We began creating our pumpkin patch diarama and we also created a disected paper pumpkin, labeled with all of the parts. See if your child can name the 5 parts of a pumpkin. I learned something new, myself!
We also had firefighter Aaron come and visit us today. He talked about fire safety and even let us get aboard his cool yellow fire truck. Ask your child to tell you about their visitor. They also have extra homework tonight! As a family, you need to decide on a safe meeting place if you would ever have a fire at your home.
A few friendly reminders for the week:
1. Tomorrow is Camoflage Day for Red Ribbon Week! If you have some camo, wear it and join us in the "FIGHT" against drugs!
2. Our second Power Drill is coming home TONIGHT! Remember, your child has until Thursday to complete it in order to earn their ticket to "Power Half Hour" on Friday!
3. This Friday October 29 is our Fall Party from 2:30-3:25. If you have not already emailed our room rep, please look on last Friday's newsletter and email her at your earliest conveinence. Also, if you signed up to help or supply food at the party, she will be calling you this week! Thanks so much!
That's all for now, friends! Your child has an extra night to practice their sight words. Due to our firefighter visitor and all of our pumpkin work, we didn't have our sight word window today. We will test tomorrow for sure!
Have a wonderful night! Enjoy this fall weather!

Thursday Reminders!
Hi families! Just a quick reminder that tonight is the cookie dough pick-up from our fall fundraiser! If your child sold any cookie dough, you will need to come by school between 5pm-8pm to pick up your order. The boxes are arranged by grade level AND teacher, so should make for easy pick-up. Thank you so much to our PTO for all they do for us! Also, if you come between 6pm-7pm you can enjoy a free taco dinner from our PTO as well.
We worked with a pumpkin theme today! Have your child tell you about their pumpkin subtraction story that they created or about our non-fiction book we read about how a seed becomes a pumpkin.
Looking ahead:
Next week is Red Ribbon week. Each day will have it's own special dress-up theme. A letter will be coming home about it tomorrow, but just for a heads up: Monday is Mix 'n Match clothing, Tuesday is camoflouge clothing, Wednesday is wear Red clothing, Thursday is HAT DAY and Friday is Spirit Day!
Thanks for your continued support at home! We are so excited that ALL of our class members completed their Power Drill homework on time and have earned their way to Power Half-Hour tomorrow! Way to go!
Have a great rest of the day!

Wild Wednesday
Check off another busy day in room 111! Our kids have been working hard this week and we have learned SO many new things. Have your child tell you about the chicken eggs we welcomed to our classroom. We are beginning our new science unit on life cycles and will be hatching (cross your fingers) baby chicks.
Today we learned about different ways to end our sentences. We found out that we don't always have to use plain old periods when writing a sentence. We can spice up our writing with exclamation marks and question marks. Ask your child to show you the body actions that go along with each punctuation. They should also be able to tell you telling sentences (period), exciting sentences (exclamation) and asking sentences (questions).
We did a silly sentence today using the letter "O" and we learned a new "o" word. Check your child to see if they can tell you what "ornery" means.
In math we continue to tackle the tricky concept of SUBTRACTION! Check your child's understanding of subtraction by giving them a few different problems. To make it more interesting and meaningful, put your information into a story. For example:
"Ms. Beverage made 12 cookies last night and Charlie ate 4. How many cookies did she have left?"
We have worked a lot with having our brain alarms go off when we hear key words such as "left". Our brains should be telling us that we will need to take-away when we hear this word. Today we have food math and used Goldfish to work through subtraction problems. Continue this idea at home using items around your house such as noodles, popcorn, crackers, m and m's, etc. Food math is fun and offers great hands-on manipulatives for our learning.
In art we began discussing Native Americans and have created several projects to reflect Native American culture. We have used our knowledge of patterning to make paper-woven placements. Have your child tell you about their weaving project. Today we learned the word "SYMMETRY" and began creating our symmetrical Native American False Faces. Ask your child to tell you what symmetry means. They should be able to give you examples of symmetry and non-examples, as well! All of our Natvie American art projects will be on display or used for our grade-level Pumpkin Festival later in November. More information on that to come later...
Finally, I am so proud to announce that EVERY single one of the first graders in my room have handed in their first Power Drill homework assignment! Ya-hoo! They were not due until tomorrow (Thursday) morning and I have ALL of them in my pocession now! THANK YOU SO MUCH for helping your child complete this first homework assignment successfully. They have all earned their way to Power Half-Hour on Friday! Amazing!
Don't forget that tomorrow is a Library day so bring your books back! Have a great evening!

Monday Madness
We're back! It was WONDERFUL to have everyone back AND healthy! Yay! We kicked off second quarter with lots of pre-assesment work. The kids did a lot of journaling today about their fall break and it was fun to hear about all of their adventures and activities. At the end of the day, we buddied up with Mrs. Keister's first grade class to begin creating our jack-o-lantern lanterns. They are sure to make our room look spooky and festive for our fall party next FRIDAY OCTOBER 29th!
Today your child's first Power Drill is coming home! Remember, you and your child need to read the Power Drill agreement together and sign the commitment form. THEN, your child has today, tomorrow and Wednesday to complete both sides of their Power Drill. ALL POWER DRILLS ARE DUE BACK ON THURSDAY! If your child returns their homework, they will earn their way to our super-fun Power Half-Hour on Friday. Please help your child be successful by setting aside a few minutes each night to help them complete their homework. Thank you so much for your support. It will pay off for your child, I promise!
Thank you again to all of your who attended last week's conferences! I loved talking to each one of you about your amazing children. If you were unable to attend, I am MORE than happy to reschedule and meet you at your conveinence. Please let me know!
One more thing, if you have pretty fall trees in your neighborhood that are starting to drop their leaves, could you send some in to class? I am wanting to do some fall leaf activities and my trees are not dropping their leaves yet. We are looking for all sizes and all fall colors! Also, if you could start hunting around your work places, neighborhoods, and houses for empty coffee cans we could really use them! Thanks so much for all of your continued support at home. Have a great evening together.

Are you having a fun week????
Hello! I am missing my first graders and thought I would write a quick post to let them know I am ready to have them come back to me. I hope that all of my friends are healthy again and hope that everyone is having a great week of vacation! Thank you to ALL of my parents who attended Parent-Teacher Conferences. I am so thankful for your time and apreciate your dedication and interest in your child's learning! If you were unable to attend your scheduled conference, PLEASE give me a call or drop me an email. What a day!
What a wonderful day it was to be at the zoo! We had a fabulous day together seeing all sorts of amazing animals. Your child should be exhausted tonight and I would guess an early bedtime is in their future. I know it is certainly in mine! Have your child tell you their favorite part about our zoo adventure today. A HUGE thank you to all 7 parents who took time out of their day to come along with us. Your company was so appreciated and you helped us make so many wonderful first grade memeories. Thank you!
We were sad to have three class members missing today. Please be sure you are having your child wash their hands more frequently than usual and please continue to help them remember to cover their sneeze/cough. The bugs that are going around already are icky and we are trying to keep our friends healthy.
Remember that tomorrow is our last full day. Friday October 8 is an EARLY DISMISSAL day. Our kids will be dismissed at 1pm. Please be sure you have made the appropriate arrangements.
Conferences are coming up next week. Be looking for your finalized conference time coming home tomorrow 10-7-10. Let me know if you have a conflict with your scheduled time. Otherwise, I will look forward to see you all next week.
Hope all is well at your house. Stay healthy and be sure you talk with your child tonight about our wonderful zoo adventure today!

I'm BACK!
Hi families! I am so sorry for the delay in my webpage update. I have been out since last Friday with a sick kiddo. He is feeling better and we are back in full swing here in room 111. Our kids were busy working on fine-tuning their first quarter skills and learning some new things, too! We are wrapping up our first quarter, which seems nearly IMPOSSIBLE! In math our kids have found some super fun computer games to provide them extra practice with their individual needs. Ask your child to tell you about "Fruit Shoot" or "Pattern Train". These games utilize some of our first quarter benchmarks in fun, engaging ways! We continued to use nonstandard units of measure to find lengths of various items in our classroom. Ask your child to tell you what they found in class that was 10 cubes long!
In reading, we contine to work on Sight Word list 6 this week. It is important that your child continues to practice their sight words every night. Not only should they be able to "see it and read it", but they should also be working at spelling them correctly in their writing. Today, we practiced writing our words and THEN tried using our sight words in sentences. WOW!! This was a challenge for some of our kids! Keep practicing those words at home. Spice it up for your child by asking them to use their sight word in a sentence. You may even want them to WRITE their words in a sentence. Challenge GALORE!
Today we also introduced NOUNS! We went on a school-wide hunt to find and label all the nouns we could find. Have your child explain to you what a noun is. Go on a hunt around your house to see how many nouns you can find. There will be TONS! The children were introduced to one of our "Wonderful Website" games called "Noun Balloons". Check out the link and play at home.
Don't forget that next Wednesday is our Zoo Field Trip! We will all leave by 8:30 and return by 3pm. Your child will need a sack lunch and drink. If you requested to ride the bus, I am planning on having you ride with us. It will be a great day! Don't forget your comfy shoes!
Also, we will be having a visiting author coming next Tuesday Oct. 5th. Cowgirl Peg will be here talking (and selling) her books. In her honor, we will be having an all-school WESTERN DAY! Start rounding up your little buckaroo's western gear and get ready for Cowgirl Peg next Tuesday.
Lastly, if you have not already done so PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE return your Conference sign-up request. As of today, I have only received 6 back. I will try my best to accomodate your requested slot. As soon as I have them all back, I can lock everyone into a spot.
Thanks so much for your understanding and patience while I was home trying to get my sick kiddo all better. As always, let me know if you need anything or if you have any questions.

Wacky Wednesday
We are at our mid-week point and getting into the groove. Today we learned how to use a number line in math to help us solve some tricky addition problems. By turning our finger into a hopping frog, we can hop our way to correct answers! It was exciting to see the enthusiasm grow as the kids realized that the answers to tricky math problems were right at their fingertips. Encourage your child at home to use a number line to help solve math problems that may not be automatic to them yet. It is a great visual and this class responded very well to this helpful math tool!
Be sure you are praciticing sight words at home. We continue to work on list 5 this week. These first grade sight words continue to show up in our daily reading and directions and so your child's mastery of these words will bring them further success and confidence in the classroom. Thank you for your continued support at home!
We had a super-fun lunch bunch today! Hooray to all of my kids who have earned 100 stars and chose to celebrate with a lunch bunch.
Tomorrow is a "D" day, so don't forget your tennis shoes for PE!

Terrific Tuesday!
Busy, busy, busy again today! We kicked off another week of guided reading centers and the kids did a SUPER job at working independently on their different activities! Hooray! Some groups worked on long and short vowel sounds by playing a super cool domino matching game. Other groups worked on making letters out of clay and forming the letter sounds they heard at the beginning of words and played a game about opposites. We all worked on the diagraph "CH" and learned that the "CH" sound can make 3 different sounds. Check your child's memory to see if they can tell you all THREE sounds the "CH" can make.
Have your child show you our "Months of the Year Macaraena". They love it!
Keep working on sight words. I was able to test some more kids today! Great job working at automatic recall at home. Thank you.
Don't forget that tomorrow is Library day!

Monday, Monday!
Monday= A Tuesday= B Wednesday= C Thursday= D Friday= A
We are back on track after our busy week last week! Learning Celebration, picture day and health screening had us busy! Learning Celebration last Friday was a HIT! Hopefully your child came home full of knowledge about the Constitution and good character traits, in addition to coming home tired from playing hard all day. I hope you had a super weekend together and are ready to rock on another week of learning.
Our kids have learned about using the laptops since my last post! We have gotten to check out the school laptops and are learning how to log in and find all sorts of learning games that are teaching us about vowel sounds, ending sounds, story elements, and addition! Have your child tell you about their favorite game they have played on their laptops, so far. They should also be able to tell you their BACKWARDS COMPUTER LOGIN NAME. Don't let them forget the magic number that comes at the end of their backwards name!
I did a sight word check on all of the students who were here today and had their folders. Many of our children have passed lists 6, 7, and 8. If your child is still working to master list 1 or 2, PLEASE find a few minutes each night to help them review. My son and I make a game out of it. Any additional time and support you can provide your child at home will only help them further in the classroom. As a class, we will be studying list 5 this week and using the words from this list in our daily activities. If your student is not yet on list 5, PLEASE continue to help them each night. I always try to do sight word checks on Mondays and Fridays. If there is ever an opportunity to do addtional checks in the middle of the week, I try very hard to squeeze some checks in. These days are scheduled a little bit differently with our reading groups, so there is not as much flexibility. Last week, we were completely off of our schedule due to Learning Celebration and some other activities. Thank you for being patient as we try to juggle all of the jobs we have to do in first grade!
This week we will continue to work on beginning and ending sounds, as well as long and short vowel sounds. We will work on sentence writing using our List 5 sight words. We will continue to work on PT+ (put together add) in math and writing number sentences. We will travel to Mrs. O'Toole's classroom for some super science activities this week and we will finish our Kansas symbol torn art project left over from last Friday.
It is sure to be another busy week. Please let me know if you need anything or if you have any questions. Thanks so much to everyone for getting in their zoo permission slips! Thank you, also, for your help at home! Have a great Monday!

Friday Wrap!
What a day! Your first grader may be tired today because we worked hard! We are wrapping up another great week together. It sure didn't feel like a short week because we were BUSY! Be sure to check the newsletter in today's Friday Folder to get the scoop on what we've been doing in the classroom. For a fun Friday activity, we broke out the shaving cream and worked on spelling CVC words using the same beginning and ending consonants. For example, we used "B _ D" and put a different short vowel in the middle to make FIVE different words (bad, bed, bid, bod, bud). Try this activity at home and see if your child can make five different CVC words with the same beginning and ending sound. "B _ T" is a great pattern to fill in!
We began our warm and cool color project with different shapes. Your child should be able to tell you some "warm" colors and some "cool" colors. Their projects are turning out great.
A few reminders that I neglected to put in the newsletter:
Next Friday is our Sunflower LEARNING CELEBRATION. Your child will be traveling to each of the 4 first grade classrooms for some patriotic activities. They will also be receiving their OWN Sunflower t-shirt for the year! Your child will need to bring a SACK LUNCH next Friday for our schoolwide Learning Celebration picnic on the playground! Please mark your calanders and remember the sack lunch! There will not be lunch choices on this day (9-17-10).
Keep working on sight word lists. I have several students that are already on list 7! SUPER JOB! If your child hasn't passed lists 1 or 2, please help them work on their word list a little each day. Remember, there are 22 first grade sight word lists. We have lots to learn! Help at home is always appreciated!
Have a super weekend! Enjoy your time together. Go Blazers!

Mid Week Check In (already?)!
Today we worked more with main and supporting characters. Your child listened to a story called, WOLF! and then created a character poster of the story. We also made flip charts to help us remember the beginning and the ending of our story. Have them tell you all about it.
In math, we worked hard today on the concept of part, part, TOTAL. Have your child tell you what a TOTAL is (great job to Eli for knowing the definition right away!).
We also had a mystery bag that we used to make predictions. Have your child tell you what surprise visitor was in our mystery bag and see if they can tell you some things about it.
PLEASE remember to send your child's fundraiser packet back to school by TOMORROW
(9-9-10). Even if you did not sell any items, we need the packets back. Your child can earn 10 stars on their starchart for returning their packet.
How is your child doing on their sight words? Your child should have passed list one by now. If they have not, please encourage and help them at home to get going on these lists. Mastering these first grade words helps build confidence in the classroom!
Have a wonderful Wednesday and don't forget to bring your library books back tomorrow!

Welcome Back
Tuesday= A Wednesday= B Thursday= C Friday= D
We're off to a great start of our short week! I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing Labor Day weekend with your families and enjoyed your time together. Our kids are switching gears from weekend mode to school mode and are having a super day. We have introduced this week's new sight word list #3, and many of our children have taken their sight word list tests today. Please be sure you are helping your child practice their sight words each night. When they feel confident, they can return their folder to school and I will test them so that they can move up to the next list.
Thank you to the families who have already returned your zoo field trip permission slips! Please remember that they are due by September 15. Also, a friendly reminder that TOMORROW the fundraiser packets are DUE!!!! Please return your packet to school with your child whether you sold anything or not! All returned packets, whether you sold items or not will be eligable for a drawing for a movie gift card! Thank you so very much!
Have a super rest of the day. As always, let me know if you need anything!

What a wet Wednesday!
Monday= D Tuesday= A Wednesday= B Thursday=C Friday= D
We are staying dry in school this week and staying busy, too! We've been working hard at learning sight word List 2 and trying to understand rhyming words. We have spent the week learning about LABELS. We have labeled things in our classroom and drawn maps of our rooms at home and labeled those, too. We have worked with different shapes this week to identify them and we have been able to create new shapes using basic shapes that we already know! Have your child draw you an "elipse". They will be impressed that you know the fancy first grade word for this basic shape. We continue to work on addition with our PT+ strategy. The children are aware that there are two ways to write a math problem. Have them show you the side by side and the tower way.
Please remember that our school wide fundraiser is going on for one more week. Anything you may be able to sell will come directly back into your child's classroom. Thank you so much for your support.
Don't forget library books come back tomorrow! Have a wonderful, soggy Wednesday!

Friday Wrap!
Another successful week in first grade! My goodness, did we work hard again this week. We spent the week learning how to tell time to the hour. Your child should be able to tell time on the hour without hesitation. Continued practice and daily exposure to this concept will further help them maintain their newfound skill! We read the book "The Grouchy Ladybug" today and set our analog clocks to match all of the times in the story. Ask your child to tell you some of the animals the Grouchy Ladybug tried to rumble with. They really enjoyed the story and did a wonderful job setting their clocks. Give them a pat on the back!
In reading time this week, we continued to work on our letter sounds and blends. We learned about consonants and reviewed the vowels by learning our "Vowel Rap". Have you child rap it for you, it was a hoot! We learned about CVC words. Have your child create some CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) nonsense words (such as jiv, fup) and challenge them to say the sounds in the word or try to say their nonsense word. This helps with letter recognition and sound connection. We wrote several silly sentences and practiced our handwriting, as well.
We have worked all week on Sight Word List 1. Today your child's yellow folder came home with List 1 tucked inside and a letter about how our sight word system works. Next week I will begin testing students who are ready to master List 1 so that they may move up to List 2. There are 22 lists to master in first grade, so we need to get started! Please help your child find further success by helping them practice at home.
We finished our underwater art creation. Ask your child to tell you about some of the creatures they created in their underwater habitat. Their projects turned out beautifully. Come by our hall next week to check out our water masterpieces!
Have a wonderful weekend together. Stay cool and safe and get ready to welcome September next week!
Looking ahead to our Specials next week:

Terrific Tuesday!
Monday= C Tuesday= D Wednesday= A Thursday= B Friday= C
We had another great day in first grade! Today we wrote another silly sentence using the letter "C". Our handwriting is looking great! We read the story, Dandelion by Don Freeman and learned about MAIN CHARACTERS and SUPPORTING CHARACTERS. Have your child tell you the difference between the two and ask them to tell you about our story. They made some terrific character posters, too! We learned a vowel rap and learned how to tell time to the hour. Many of our first graders were very familiar with this concept. Great job first graders! We will continue to practice telling time on both digital and analog clocks. Extra practice at home will help a lot! We learned about "habitats" today and talked about the Arctic. We used oatmeal to make polar bears. Have your child tell you about their art project that we started today. We had to get gooey and they did great! Hope you are all having a great start to your week! Check back soon to see what we're doing in first grade!

The First Week is a SUCCESS!
We made it through our first full week of first grade! What an amazing bunch of first graders we have in our class family! We have worked hard this week learning about patterns, vowels, sight words, imaginary cows, adding, calendar, "Needs" and "Wants", listening and following directions and taking care of members of our classroom. We have made it through one whole week of big-kid lunch time, hot recesses, earning "3's" in our Specials classes (yay!) and Mystery Scrap! We learned some important words this week. Ask your child to tell you what "Importatnt", "Respect", "Needs" and "Wants" all mean. We even had our first FIRE DRILL and we did AWESOME! I am so proud of our first graders. They all deserve an extra hug this weekend for a job well-done on their first full week of first grade!
Be sure you read our Friday Newsletter that is coming home tonight. It is full of important information that you need to know! Please help your child remember that next week is the First Grade's "Stuffed Animal Week". A letter is coming home in your child's green Home Folder about that. We also had our PTO fundraiser kick-off assembly this afternoon. Have you child tell you all about it!
Have a wonderful weekend together! Be sure your child gets plenty of sleep and lots of time to play and be a kid! They have worked hard and deserve a break so that they can come back on Monday ready to do it all again!
As always, never hesitate to give me a call or drop me an email if you have any questions or concerns!

First Full Week, Here We Go!
Monday=B Tuesday=C Wednesday=D Thursday=A Friday=B
Welcome back! It's our first full week of first grade and we are off to a super start! Today we learned about syllables. Check your child's memory to see if they can tell you what syllables are! Test them further to see if they can tell you how many syllables are in their name and in the names of different family members! We are finishing up our paper people. Come by later this week to check out our creative side on display! Our class is doing an AMAZING job working together and helping each other. I am so proud of their hard work. First grade is a BIG change from Kindergarten and our kids are doing FABULOUS! Don't forget to send your child to school in gym shoes on PE days (B and D days) and Library books come back to school on C days! Let's have a wonderful week of learning galore!

First Day of School Is Here!
We did it! Our first graders made it through their first day as official first graders. We had a busy morning organizing our supplies and meeting new friends in our class family. We had a chance to check out our new big-kid playgroud before it got too hot AND we got to create a puzzle piece that represented each one of us! There is so much to do and I can't wait to see all of my friends again tomorrow! Have a fun afternoon!
